Our lives are made up of moments. These moments are moments that we share with our friends, family, complete strangers, and anyone else in our lives. Besides actually sharing these moments with these people we share them by telling stories of what happened. Think about it; what is the first thing you do when you see a friend you haven’t seen in a week? You probably tell them a story or two about something crazy that happened that week or maybe you make one up to look cool; whatever the case maybe, telling stories is how we entertain and communicate with each other.
Next time you are with a group of people look at which one gets the most attention. I would bet it is the one that is the best storyteller and has the best stories to tell. That is why I like to collect good stories and why I say yes to very opportunity unless I have a better alternative. For example, I always wanted the car I was driving in to break down in the middle of nowhere. Yes, maybe once it happened it wouldn’t be so great but I just think that it would make a great story: pushing the car 5 miles to the nearest gas station that looked a place from a scary movie. I think that would be an entertaining story for others to hear.
The truth is though, stories are not just a way of entertaining people; they are a way of defining ourselves. We are the stories we tell. The qualities we value and the type of person we are come through our stories. Every part of our being is made up by the stories and experiences we have. This is why I am working on finding my story. I want to find that one maybe two stories that really define me. I want that story to be about the time in my life when I faced true adversity and overcame that adversity to succeed beyond my wildest dreams. However, our story doesn’t have to be this big. Maybe it is about a time you made a small change that turned your life around or maybe it is about a small occurrence that might not have meant much to others but meant a lot to you. Whether you story is big or small, shows failure or triumph, is bad or good; find your story, the one that defines who you are and what you believe in.
So some may ask what do stories have to do with living forever. To answer that I want to first look at history; not only in the general sense but the word itself. Break down the word history, his-story. (Sorry ladies, men are too arrogant to every include women in on anything; we even put men in the word women. However, we can call it his/her-story). His/her-story is full of the stories of great people and what they did and that is what they were: stories. Before pen and paper people told stories orally and they were passed down from one person to another. This is how we live forever. We fill our lives with stories that people will want to retell to others. We go on great adventures that others will want to relive by telling the stories. We pass our stories on to our children and they pass it on to their children. Most of all, we set out every day to create a great stories out of whatever life hands to us and take advantage of every opportunity that we get. We don’t just tell great stories; we live great lives.
I do not have too many great stories yet but I have set out to find my defining stories and to make the best stories out of whatever I am giving. What are some of your greatest stories?
