Albert Einstein was a brilliant man who once said “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Not to question Einstein’s intelligence but I think he may be a little off on that definition. To me, that definition sounds a lot like what the definition of persistence should be. However, I would change the word expecting to creating. So my definition of persistence is doing the same thing over and over and creating different result.
I saw a great example of this when I went hiking as part of my summer bucket list. The trail I took went alongside a creek. I am assuming that is creep was not always there, so how would it get there? The answer is through persistence. At one point the water was blocked by rocks but the water did not know any better than to just keep flowing into the rocks. Eventually the water broke down those rocks and formed the creek I had the pleasure of walking by.
This is just a small scale example but think what persistence can do on a large scale. Did you ever heard of the Grand Canyon? Well that was formed in the same way that my little creek was formed. Think how “grand” your life can be if you added that kind of persistence to it (see what I did there…I know not funny but I liked it). Every time something didn’t go your way, every time you didn’t get the result you wanted, every time you failed; it wouldn’t matter if you were persistent enough. It would not matter because you would keep trying and trying until you achieved the goal you set out for and created the results you wanted.
Being persistent is not just about doing the same thing over and over again; it is about fighting. You have to fight for what you really want and doing the same thing over and over again is not going to get you there alone. Every time you do it over you have to put something extra in. Maybe you put a little more effort in or do a little more preparation or approach the situation in a different way entirely; whatever you do you have to fight. You have to be willing to put everything you have into getting what you want. It can be hard and a little crazy but if you want something bad enough and you are persistent, there is no limit to what you can do.
On second thought, maybe Einstein was right and it is insanity but maybe insanity and persistence are synonymous. Maybe be you have to be insane to go to the gym every morning and push your body to its limits trying to get that perfect beach body you are looking for. Maybe you have to be insane to spend hours practicing your singing hoping to make it big one day. Maybe you have to be insane to go after the same girl/guy every day because you could not imagine life without them. Maybe you have to be insane, or maybe you know about the Grand Canyon and how much persistence can do.
I am always going to fight for the things that are important to me because I know that persistence pays off. Are you going to be persistent with your dreams? Has there ever been a time when persistence has paid off for you?
