Last year at school a lot of people said that my room was boring because I didn’t hang up any posters or decorate too much. I am a simple guy and having a simple room was fine with me. This year however, I am going to have my own room and I decided I should hang up some poster. Naturally being a bit obsessed with motivation, I wanted to hang up motivational poster. So I found this cool website that lets me create my own motivational posters. This got me thinking.
I had to think of what I wanted to put on my posters. I am a little (by a little I mean a lot) frugal, so I had to decided what I really wanted to put on the posters, what I really valued. So I made a list of my top five values. These are the values that I came up with:
Opportunity- I want to get the most out of every opportunity I take and take every opportunity I can. I do not want to look back wondering what would have happened if I just said yes that one time. The way I plan to do this is to say yes to every opportunity I get unless I have a better alternative. If you ever seen the movie Yes Man, it’s like that except I am not going to take it that far.
Perseverance- If I believe in something and really want to achieve a goal I set, I will not give up until it happens. It could take a week, it could take a year but it doesn’t matter I will not give up. This value can be summed up in these words “I don’t need easy, I just need possible.”
Time- I am so fascinated by time and the way we use it. It seems hard to believe that every second we have has the potential to be great. It seems every harder to believe it is possible to make every second of our lives meaningful. However, I want a meaningful life and I want to make every second count because once they are lost they can’t be found. Although it seems hard, it is possible and that’s all I need.
Gratitude- Every day I can wake up, put on my shoes, walk out the door, and go for a run. I can hear the music from my iPod, I can see the sun rising, and I have the ability to run. I am truly grateful for my health and believe that there is so much in our lives to be grateful for. I want to make sure I appreciate ever gift life has to offer including my friends, family, and health. I also want to make sure that I focus on these gifts instead of focusing on anything bad that might be happening to me.
Character- I want my character to define me and the perceptions others have of me. When others talk about me I want them to only have nice thing to say about me. There are so many things that go into this one. I will always be kind to other no matter how they treat me. I will stick to my word and do the things I promise. I will have integrity and honesty in everything I do. I will continually try to inspire others to be the best that they can be. Most of all I will do the right thing even if it is the harder path to take. Although I talked a lot about how people will perceive me, character is not about that. One of my favorite quotes of all I time go along with this value and that is, “Character is not what you do when a crowd is watching, but what you do when their backs are turned.”
Those are the top 5 values that I will live by. It may take me some time but my goal is to live by these wholeheartedly and you know how I feel about achieving goals. Until the other day though, I didn’t realize just how valuable these values where to me (see what I did there). The other day a friend asked what my thoughts on learning to live life were. Although I do not know the best way to live life, if I did I would probably be a famous motivational speaker and have several books published, I believe finding your values is a good place to start.
I know that if I live by these values, I will life a happy and fulfilling live. This is why they are so important to me and why I am going to hang them up on posters. I want to remind myself every day to live by them. I challenge you to find your values and life by them or maybe you already know your values. If so I would love to hear what they are.
Lastly, I would appreciate a little bit of help. I am trying to find a good quote that represents my idea making the most of time to put on my poster. I have some in mind but none that just feel right. If you know any good ones or could come up with a good one I would love to hear it and be thrilled to put it on my poster.
