Lately I have realized that I am almost moving backwards in my journey to find my passion. With every day that passes. I seem to find something new that I have an interest in and can see myself pursuing. This thought worried my a bit until I realized something else; taking steps backwards isn’t always a bad thing. Most people see going backward as a bad thing because they think it is a sign that they are making no progress. I view moving backwards a little differently than most.
I think of it like a maze. If you are in a maze and you come to a dead-end, you are going to have to go backwards to move forward. You have to get onto a different path which will eventually lead you to the places you want to be. This happens to us almost every day. We conduct ourselves in one way because we think it will lead us where we want to go but that is not always the case. So we have to back track to correct ourselves and find the right way to go. This is why sometimes going backwards is actually going forward. You realize you are going the wrong way or going down the wrong path and you correct yourself.
Going backward can also give us another perspective on the path we are heading down. Sometimes we unsure if we are doing the right things but we are afraid to go back and reevaluate the situation. There is such a bad connotation with going backwards that we wouldn’t even think to do it. It could help to go back to the start and look at the direction we chose. Maybe it is the right one and we just need to be reassured or maybe it’s the wrong one and we need to find a new path. Going backwards can help us see what the case is.
From now on if you are unsure about something, take a step back. Look at the situation again. If you find that you were right in the direction you were going, you will be able to move forward more confidently. However, if you were wrong you will be able to switch directions to the right one and move forward. Just remember that life is like the maze, sometimes you have to move backwards to move forward.
