I decided to try something new and make this week’s post a Motivational Tuesday post. (Really, I was too busy to post yesterday but we can keep that our little secret). Last week I talked about taking chances and I have to admit I disappointed myself this weekend. I had the opportunity to take a chance and I didn’t do it. It was just a small chance and nothing major would have come from it but I still did not take the chance. I had no reason not to take advantage of it but for some reason I didn’t. I am not only disappointed because I didn’t take a chance, which I want to start doing, but also because I missed a moment. I missed a moment to have a new experience and for something cool maybe to happen.
Me missing this moment from not taking a chance made me think about how many moments we miss on a daily basis for some many different reasons. One thing I know that causes people to miss moments is the holy grail of distractions: our cell phones. When I walk around campus I notice so many people walking around looking down at their phones. Yes, I do this sometimes as well but it is a rare occasion for me. My friends, and especially my mom, get mad at me because I am not very good at answering text messages. This is because most of the time I am around people and when I am around people I do not want the distraction of my phone. I want to enjoy the company of the people I am with and I don’t want to miss a moment.
Think about how many times you have been with your friends and something funny, awkward, or interesting happened but you missed it because you were answering a text message. Also, think about the little things you miss because you are distracted. One day I was walking to the gym and there was snow on the ground. In the snow was a smiley face. For some reason seeing the smiley face in the snow put me in such a good mood. I know, the littlest things can make me happy but I love it. Anyway, if I was distracted by my phone or iPod I would not have seen the smiley face and might not have had such a great day that day.
I feel like people miss out on these moments all of the time. People can miss these moments either be because they do not want to take a chance, the get distracted by some type of technology, or maybe they are in a bad mood. People say that I am so energetic and happy all the time and it’s not because nothing bad ever happens to me; I just choose not to let things upset or take away my happiness. I know that if I am in a bad mood I will carry it to everything I do. I could be in an awesome place with awesome people and still have a terrible time if I am in a bad mood. I could miss a plethora (check me out using an SAT word) of moments because of my mood. I would hate to have that happen because once you miss a moment you cannot get it back. I am a big believe that little moments can have a huge effect on you, such as my smiley face, and I want to have as many moments as I can.
These moments can really be powerful and it is a shame that people miss out on so many of them. People need to stop being so distracted by technology and start paying attention to the world around them. They should take chances because you can guarantee that nothing is going to happen if you do not take the chance. Don’t miss the opportunity to see a smiley face that can make you day or meet someone new in person because you have to answer a text. Don’t miss the opportunity to let something amazing happen just because you had a bad morning. Don’t let daily distractions prevent you from catching all the moments life has to offer. These moments that you are missing may seem small but sometimes you look back and realize the small things were the most important.
